Why Representation of Women in Beauty’s Workforce Drops by Nearly 50% at the Senior Management Level

Ensuring gender parity in the beauty industry requires balanced representation at every level, from entry to C-suite. The challenge? Attracting more men at entry levels while enabling women to rise to the top.

In an article for Women’s Wear Daily, Aniela Unguresan highlights a critical imbalance: “Men are a minority in beauty’s workforce but concentrated at the top, while women, who form the majority, are concentrated at the bottom.” This disparity is underscored by sentiment analysis by EDGE Empower® of over 8,000 beauty industry employees. Women are significantly less likely to feel prepared for leadership roles, familiar with the criteria for career advancement and promotion, or balanced between having a career and a family.

The way forward? Representation should be a key focus of an organization’s DE&I strategy. It’s a fundamental pillar of the EDGE Standards and Certification System that defines success in gender and intersectional equity. Ensuring a balanced talent pipeline can deliver long-term, sustainable DE&I progress. With EDGE Certification®, organizations can gain visibility and credibility for their DE&I commitments and progress through independent verification by third-party auditors.
