Mercer, a global consulting leader in advancing health, wealth and careers, and a wholly owned subsidiary of Marsh & McLennan Companies (NYSE: MMC), has obtained the first level of EDGE certification for its UK business. Mercer is amongst the 10 first UK companies to obtain this certification. Overall more than 170 organisations worldwide have engaged with the EDGE methodology.

EDGE is the leading global assessment methodology and business certification standard for gender equality. The independent certification follows a rigorous methodology to analyse companies’ current gender equality status and suggest areas of improvement and development. EDGE conducted a comprehensive review of Mercer’s policies, practices and data, and surveyed all company staff across the UK.  As a result, EDGE confirmed that UK Mercer is above average and more gender balanced when compared against each of its peer groups – both commercial and professional services companies, worldwide and in the UK.

“We are proud of the progress we have made on gender equality and obtaining this certification demonstrates our commitment to diversity,” said Fiona Dunsire, Mercer’s UK CEO. “At Mercer, providing everyone with equal opportunity for development and advancement is paramount, and we are determined to do more to ensure all our employees thrive. Promoting gender equality is not only the right thing to do; it is also a good business strategy.”

Aniela Unguresan, Co-Founder EDFE Certified Foundation, commented: “Mercer is a true example of authentic commitment and organisational alignment as highlighted in their own When Women Thrive research. It is clear from leaders and colleagues in the company who walk the talk and understand the link to business success and sustainable change.”

About EDGE Certification
EDGE is the leading global assessment methodology and business certification standard for gender equality. The EDGE assessment methodology was developed by the EDGE Certified Foundation and launched at the World Economic Forum in 2011. EDGE Certification has been designed to help companies not only create an optimal workplace for women and men, but also benefit from it. EDGE stands for Economic Dividends for Gender Equality and is distinguished by its rigor and focus on business impact. The methodology uses a business rather than theoretical approach that incorporates benchmarking, metrics, and accountability into the process. It assesses policies, practices, and numbers across five different areas of analysis: equal pay for equivalent work, recruitment and promotion, leadership development training and mentoring, flexible working, and company culture. EDGE Certification has received the endorsement of business, government, and academic leaders from around the world. For more information, visit
